"In Bloom" by P. Tremblay brings the Blob back to horrible life - or does he?!

A journalist is writing about algal blooms around Cape Cod. She's doing research interviews on the July, 1983 Orleans' tragedy...

Water temps are 10° hotter than 15 years ago.

And, Jimmy Lang has a weird story to tell - but she likes to find the truth in such tales.

At Boland Pond, his father had tried to rescue a drowning boy - when their skins erupted, bubbling into ugly rashes!

Jimmy couldn't help as he felt too lightheaded & vomited...

"Drunk on smoke", he finds himself connected to his demanding father - regressing thru a "wormy hive mind" into a "singular sentience"!!

Suddenly, the algae choked water rises to a colorful wave & smashed into his dad - it carried the man "across the ballfield, a street, some woods & into a saltwater marsh"...

The connection of shared thoughts is cut off & his father is never found again.

Since nobody else saw this blob, Lang thought that he had hallucinated the entire course of events.

Later, on the Sagamore Bridge, the journalist is stuck in a traffic crawl - when suddenly, she senses something weird on the wind.

And she reacts with a trapped animal panic!

Right behind her, she sees something green rise to a wave crest & crash onto the bridge - clearing it of cars!!

40 feet is deep enough to hide... Things.

Algae are the most successful of microorganisms - even living under extreme pressures & dangerous niches.

Photoautotrophs created the conditions that allows evolution to 'work' & oxygenated our atmosphere.

They still fill vital ecological functions today, like keeping the planet's carbon & nitrogen 'budgets' balanced...

But, they produce toxins that can kill animals - including human beings. And, heavy blooms create airborne miasmas that cause hallucinations...

In the end, this story leaves readers wondering - as it provides few concrete answers.

* Is considered a sellout in Salmonid society for refusing to fight and die.

* That's hair dye dripping down her face.

* Vegan hippie, has a bedroom full of rose quartz.

MANUEL (マヌエル)

* Portuguese man-o'-war.

* Fascinated with the history of telegraphy.

* A bit of an airhead.

* Talks to his zooids for advice.

O'CARROLL (オキャロル)

* Octocoral.

* Tired of people assuming he has something do with the Octarians.

* Stylises himself as a badass, but really rather spineless.

* Loves younger men.

* People have often mistaken him for a Christmas tree.

THARASSA (ヴェラ)

* Moon wrasse.

* Thinks of themselves as "punk", but actually comes from a wealthy family of caviar farmers.

* Smokes a lot.

* Wishes people would stop calling them a girl.

* Afraid of the ocean.

STAHLI (スタリ)

* Mutant algal bloom.

* Came into existence quite recently.

* Born from algae exposed to radioactive Salmonid poop.

* A theologer in his spare time.

* Gets claustrophobic very easily.

I've even made an album cover.

This took me hours, but it was totally worth it. Worse ways to spend my life, I suppose.

I think an important caveat to yesterday's bout of it's-all-been-done-posting is that it hasn't all been done equally. High Fantasy, you know, the observation that everyone's been chasing the dragon of LOTR is pretty done to death. It was solid and everyone wants in on it. Whereas with the capeshit the remixing and rehashing and so forth is also taking place but with a source material that by and large isn't. Like. Good in the first place. There's not nowhere to go but up but there's a hell of a lot of up-going on the table here
